In this sign conquer Ring
On February 24th 1821, Alexander Ypsilantis, the leader of the Filiki Eteria - a secret organization that initiated the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire- issues in lasi the proclamation “Fight for Faith and Country” which is considered the official proclamation of the Greek Revolution and raises the first flag of the Greek Revolution.
The flag was tricolor white, black and red. White symbolizing innocence of the operation against the tyrants, black symbolizing the willingness to die for country and freedom and red symbolizing the Independence of Greek People and their desire to fight for the country’s resurrection. In the center of the flag is the cross framed by a laurel wreath and the inscription “In this sign conquer”, motto of the Roman emperor and founder of the Byzantine Empire Constantine the Great.
