Bibi van der Velden creates exquisite jewelry using precious materials like 18k fairtrade gold, diamonds, and baroque pearls. Her designs, while intricately crafted, exude a distinctly human touch. Bibi envisions jewelry as a source of inspiration, aiming to imbue each piece with playfulness, personal connection, and a high level of artistry. Grounded in traditional craftsmanship, Bibi describes her creations as "miniature sculptures." Her unique approach involves sketching and hand-carving the initial ideas for each piece in wax, using sustainable and unexpected materials such as 60,000-year-old mammoth tusk, ostrich eggs, and scarab wings. Bibi's artistic background, which includes studying fine arts in Florence, Italy, and training at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, contributes to the distinctive sensibility in her work. Born in New York and raised in England and the Netherlands, she launched her eponymous brand in 2006 and currently operates from her studio in Amsterdam. Reflecting her Dutch heritage and drawing inspiration from nature and the animal world, Bibi's designs range from tornado-shaped earrings to statement alligator earrings carved from mammoth tusk and gold. A touch of surprise characterizes her pieces, such as ornate cocktail rings concealing smaller sleek gold rings within. Movement and transformation define Bibi's creations, evident in pieces like the Galaxy Spinning Pearl Ring where a Tahitian pearl spins. Each Bibi van der Velden piece holds a deeper story and connection than what meets the eye.
